A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers that is downloaded on to your computer when you visit a website. Cookies are used by many websites and can do a number of things, eg remembering your preferences, recording what you have put in your shopping basket, and counting the number of people looking at a website.

Of the four sites highlighted in the ICO’s report, only one, the BBC website, actually offers visitors the abillity to control cookies simply and easily. So it is perhaps no wonder that those people who are aware of the law, either feel cheated by it or that all it does is make the website look less well designed. After hearing of the new cookie guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office, we wanted to get to grips with what compliance looks like now, and how to achieve it.. As we’re no legal team, we got in touch with someone who is. This blog dives first into the lawyer’s view on the new cookie guidance, then we apply that knowledge to the options available to WordPress websites. Everyone's talking about cookies! In the last few days cookies have made the headlines several times – with the CNIL announcing that they intend to make online advertising a "top priority" in 2019 (see our blog here) and the ICO releasing first their adtech update report and then, most recently, their updated cookie … The ICO’s blog post makes clear that cookie compliance will increasingly be a regulatory priority, and that companies should start working towards compliance now.

Stressing again the need for full disclosure, the ICO concedes that it needs to continue working with industry and its counterparts in other EU jurisdictions to define the right approach. The ICO’s own website is compliant with the cookie law, but Smith said it is not a model of how things should be done. There are probably much more imaginative and user-friendly ways of getting consent. The ICO is hoping that the industry will take the lead in coming up with best practice solutions and educating consumers about the new law. The glass half empty kind may say that while they've got a great story to say on cookies, they see a risk that their inclusion on the list may contain an innuendo, published to the world, to the effect that ICO sees them as having a wider compliance issue and as the cookie issue fades from importance, the innuendo may remain - and that may not be helpful There is, of course, another kind of ICO BG, Baixo Guandu.
